The Department of Apiculture in Puławy belongs to the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice, subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The research activities of the Department are focused on:
  • Improvement of methods of bees selection with special emphasis on hygienic behavior
  • Improvement of methods of honey bee queens rearing and instrumental insemination
  • Improvement of methods of identification of bee subspecies bred in Poland based on measurements of morphological characteristics of workers
  • Monitoring of phenologico-agricultural factors and climatic conditions affecting the development of colonies
  • Improvement of methods for the development of bee colonies
  • Optimization of methods of wintering of bee colonies
  • Improvement of methods of bee diseases control
  • Improvement of methods of assessing the quality and purity of bee products
Our studies are directed mainly to assess the quality of bee queens and drones, natural mating of bee queens, the development of Varroa mite population and hygienic behavior of bees. The aim of our researches are better understanding of bee biology and the introduction and dissemination of new apiary management methods, particularly in relation to reduce the Varroa mite infestation of colonies. We cooperate with national and international beekeeping associations and bee breeders, and our experience in carrying out consulting and training for beekeepers allows the dissemination of the research results.

As part of the "SmartBees" project, specialists of our Institute will be involved in activities of three working groups (WP 5, 6, 7):

WP 5 - Development of new extension methods for sustainable apicultural production and maintained diversity
Department of Apiculture, along with other project partners, will be involved in conducting surveys among beekeepers and breeders to obtain a detailed information on: subspecies of bees kept in apiaries, apiary management methods, etc. We will participate in the analysis of data collected and report the state of knowledge and innovation in the beekeeping sector.

WP 6 - Field testing and selection of local bee populations
In cooperation with the task coordinator, the Institute of Beekeeping in Kirchhain, we will be involved in organizing the network of regional apiaries in Poland that keep local bee populations. The standard assessment of the honeybees value will be conducted in these apiaries. Additionally the observation of V.destructor mite population development and identification of the genotypes of bees that exhibit natural against mite defense mechanisms. In the apiaries of the Department of Apiculture, the further detailed studies based on the VSH protocol and selection based on the test results will be conducted. The samples of bees from all the colonies will be collected for molecular testing by other project partners.

WP 7 – Dissemination
Within this group, we will be involved in establishing the regional network of apiaries and breeding apiaries as well as other stakeholders interested in cooperation in the conservative breeding. We will work on the transfer of knowledge, tools, technology and strategies developed during the project, including training of beekeepers and bee breeders, the implementation of evaluation and selection methods of bees promoted in the project, the dissemination of the results of research in beekeeping journals and scientific conferences.

Zakład Pszczelnictwa w Puławach należy do Instytutu Ogrodnictwa w Skierniewicach, podległego Ministerstwu Rolnictwa i Rozwoju Wsi. Podstawowe działania badawcze Zakładu koncentrują się na
  • Doskonaleniu metod selekcji pszczół ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zachowania higienicznego
  • Doskonaleniu metod wychowu matek pszczelich oraz sztucznego unasieniania
  • Doskonalenie metod identyfikacji podgatunków pszczół w Polsce na podstawie pomiarów cech morfologicznych robotnic
  • Monitorowaniu czynników fenologiczno-rolniczych i klimatycznych wpływających na rozwój rodzin pszczelich
  • Doskonaleniu metod oceny rozwoju rodzin pszczelich
  • Optymalizacji sposobów zimowania pszczół
  • Doskonaleniu metod kontroli chorób pszczół
  • Doskonaleniu metod oceny jakości i czystości tych produktów pszczelich

WP 6 (Badania terenowe i wybór lokalnych populacji pszczół).

Będziemy też prowadzić szereg działań w zakresie transferu wiedzy, narzędzi, technologii i strategii wypracowanych w trakcie trwania projektu, obejmujących szkolenia pszczelarzy i hodowców, wdrażanie metod oceny i selekcji pszczół zaproponowanych w projekcie, upowszechnienie uzyskanych wyników badań w czasopismach pszczelarskich, naukowych i na konferencjach. W trakcie projektu będziemy również współpracować z pozostałymi partnerami projektu.
